Glutamate: A Double Edged Sword.. Part 2: GMO’s – The Poisoning of Our Families!

Genetically Modified Organisms, better known as GMO Food, is a result of DNA alteration – the changing of God’s design of creation. This alteration by man is known as genetic engineering and is done by moving, splicing, and otherwise re-arranging pieces of DNA in ways that were never before humanly or naturally possible. Our families may be paying the greatest price of all, “our health”, for what is quickly becoming known as one of mankind’s evilest and most devious attempts at restructuring the genomes of living organisms.   

There are five major varieties of GMO foods – soy, corn, canola, cotton and sugar beets. They were first approved to be used in the United States in 1994. Currently, up to 93% of the U.S. corn and 94% of the U.S. soybeans are genetically engineered. Along with hybrid wheat, corn and soy make up the majority of our food system and are contained in over 30,000 processed foods. The corn and soy plants have been genetically altered in two ways.

  • The first gene inserted into the plant’s DNA is a bacterial gene which allows the plant to become highly resistant to glyphosate contained in herbicides. With this new manmade gene, surrounding weeds can now be sprayed and killed with toxic herbicides, such as Roundup, without killing the actual crop plant. Although the crop plant is not killed, the poison is absorbed by these plants which enter into our food supply with its final destination going inside our bodies, where it is free to wreak havoc on our health. 

Roundup has been used since the 1970’s and is the most widely used herbicide in the United Sates. Glyphosate, Roundup’s active ingredient, is the only chemical component in Roundup to be tested and it has long been considered safe to use. Interestingly on March 25, 2015, an article printed in Scientific American stated that the cancer-research arm of the World Health Organization announced that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans. It is also important to note that a recent study published February 2014 in the journal BioMed Research International found that the testing of some of Roundup’s inert chemicals were 125 times more toxic than its active ingredient glyphosate alone. Roundup was the most toxic herbicide and insecticide tested (1)The other chemicals in Roundup, known as being “inert” or “chemically inactive”, have never been required to go through safety testing.  

  • The second gene, from the soil bacterium called Bt (for Bacillus thuringiensis), is inserted into the plant’s DNA to help increase the amount of the plant’s own natural pesticide in order to make the plant become more resistant to disease and insects. The first problem is that God has already designed plants to produce their own natural pesticide called phytoalexans. This natural pesticide is usually found in low concentrations to help protect the plant. The danger with inserting this second gene is that the plant now is able to produce its own natural pesticide, phytoalexans, in much higher concentrations and continuously which does not happen naturally. When we consume GMO foods, along with the exposure to glyphosate and other chemicals contained in herbicides, we are now taking in higher concentrations of pesticides at levels which are known to be toxic (1) and/or carcinogenic (2). Studies have also shown that when you insert certain genes, such as those to make a plant more pest resistant, it also affects other genes that may have undesired harmful implications which the extent is still unknown to us (3). Once you genetically modify a food, you can never reverse back to its “pure state”.

GMO foods have NEVER been proven to be safe for human consumption as there has NEVER been a long-term study to support their safety. This can NEVER be overstated enough! The safety approval of GMO foods was based on short-term animal studies which took place during a 3-month period of time. This is because the World Health Organization (WHO) only requires a minimum of 90-day testing to receive safety approval. 

There are many credible scientific studies that clearly demonstrate why GMO food should not be consumed while more are developing every year:

Our babies, children and grandchildren are at the greatest risk to the detrimental effects of GMO foods. This is because their immune system and their antioxidant system are not entirely developed until around the age of 7. Children born after 1994 are the first groups that have been consistently exposed to GMO foods and these higher concentrations of pesticides. Soy-based infant formula is an example of the most common form used. Natural soy contains high levels of manganese, fluoride, aluminum, and especially glutamate. Soybeans naturally have one of the highest glutamate levels of any of the plant products. GMO soy sprayed with Roundup will dramatically increase this risk even further. Results in a recent study demonstrated that Roundup might lead to excessive extracellular glutamate levels in rat hippocampus (12). This is the part of the brain responsible for memory, in particular long-term memory. When glutamate is at an excessive level, it becomes an excitotoxin capable of killing and damaging nerve cells. This is critical to know and understand as our children’s brains and immune systems are being formed during these earliest years of their lives.  

We would like to believe and trust that the FDA would never have allowed these GMO foods to exist and be consumed unless they were proven to be safe, but this would be wishful thinking. A ground-breaking book called “Altered Genes, Twisted Truth” by Steven M. Druker has just been released. He explains what really took place 20 years ago allowing GMO foods to inundate our food system without safety ever being a concern. Mr. Druker is a public interest attorney who initiated a lawsuit that forced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. For the love and care of your family and future generations, I highly encourage you to read this book, seek the truth, and learn how to protect the health of you and your family.

GMO food is a serious problem that is not going to disappear any time soon, nor on its own. Every generation in history has had its challenges but none have ever been exposed to what is being called “Frankenfoods” of the 21st century. Our food was created and given to us as a blessing from God to nourish our bodies and minds not to be manipulated with having harmful effects. These foods, containing toxins, are poisons which are accumulating on a daily basis within our bodies and brains at unprecedented concentrations and amounts never seen before in history. Biologically, it is impossible for the human body and brain to be exposed to any toxin or poison without having to expend some of its precious gold, called “glutathione”, from our antioxidant system for the poison’s removal. Herbicides in particular are known to stimulate high levels of free radicals capable of permanently damaging our tissues and organs. Our body’s glutathione levels are in constant jeopardy of becoming depleted at a far quicker and earlier rate than ever before. For this reason alone, it is not worth the risk of consuming GMO foods. As it is with all things in life, it is better to be safe than sorry. I urge you to begin learning how to avoid GMO food – your family’s lives depend on it!
